Institutional Research and Decision Support


The IUPUI Survey Committee has been established to oversee campus interests in regards to surveying students, faculty, and staff. The committee is charged with reviewing surveys of the IUPUI population through a Survey Review Process, maintaining a list of all official surveys administered at IUPUI, coordinating survey administration periods of such, and providing samples when needed. The IUPUI Survey Committee seeks to ensure:

  • Sponsorship by a unit on campus
  • Relevance to campus mission
  • Adherence to campus requirements (including IRB and Purchasing)
  • Results are used for institutional improvement
  • Mindfulness of respondent burden
  • Responsible use of university resources

In addition to the above oversight charge, the IUPUI Survey Committee seeks to create a culture that uses survey data for institutional improvement. The committee will facilitate communication about IUPUI survey projects and survey results. By making survey information more readily available, the findings can be used by various audiences for multiple purposes and researchers can be connected to relevant resources. In addition, the IUPUI Community responding to surveys will see how their input is used and valued with the hope of increasing future survey response rates.

Survey Review Process Definitions and Scope

Any survey that meets one of the following conditions should undergo the IUPUI Survey Committee review process:

  • Surveys that request a random sample of IUPUI students, faculty, or staff.
  • Surveys that will generalize to the broader IUPUI population of students, faculty, or staff.
  • Surveys that target specific sub-populations such as enrollment status, gender, ethnicity.
  • Surveys used for institutional measures and improvement.

Please note that the deadline for submissions for review are: 

For fall administration: July 1 
For spring administration: November 1 
For summer administration: March 1

Decisions are made within a month of the submission deadline. For late submissions or special cases, decisions are made on a case-by-case basis.

The IUPUI survey approval requirements and process are outlined below:

  1. Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) Compliance 

    Researchers are required to take the FERPA tutorial before accessing student information. It is your responsibility to ensure FERPA compliance. For more information about FERPA, visit the Office of Research and Compliance page on FERPA Policies & Guidance.

  2. IRB Approval

    Ensure that you are aware of the IRB requirements for studies involving human subjects. It is not the responsibility of the IUPUI Survey Committee to confirm that IRB approval has been obtained. For more information about IRB approval at IUPUI, visit the Office of Research Compliance.

  3. Review existing survey results to determine redundancies or to enhance existing knowledge

    The IUPUI Survey Committee will maintain a list of all known surveys. We can help review those surveys with you to ensure that your survey does not duplicate any existing surveys.

  4. Survey Approval Form

    The survey approval form should be submitted to the IUPUI Survey Committee by the appropriate deadlines.

  5. Sample and Administration Time Frame

    The IUPUI Survey Committee will assess the request and contact you if further actions are necessary. When approved, the survey will be added to the list of Other Campus Approved Surveys, a sample population for the survey will be arranged by the IUPUI Survey Committee, and the email dates will be provided. We are coordinating contact (email) dates so that participants do not receive more than one request per day and are not asked to complete more than two surveys per semester, when possible.

  6. Data and Results

    All submitters are encouraged to provide a summary of how the data were used for campus improvement or provide articles, reports, etc. that show that the data were used in some fashion. The data and results will be shared on the Other Campus Approved Surveys page.

  7. After Survey Implementation

    Once the survey has been administered, the IUPUI Survey Committee will request follow-up information on response rates, uses/reports, etc.
